The exhibition examines Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s perception of nuclear weapons and combines his works with those by other modern-day artists.
The advent of the atomic bomb, which was to change the fate of humankind, had a profound effect on Friedrich Dürrenmatt, inspiring him to produce an extensive visual and literary oeuvre, to get involved in citizens’ initiatives and to take up the pacifist cause.
In his famous play “The Physicists” as well as in his caricatures and cabaret sketches, he resorted to humour and the grotesque to warn humanity about the risk of self-destruction.
In relation to the ethical challenges presented by new technologies and the notion of the Anthropocene, how can his ideas help us reflect on the issues of today?
The works by Friedrich Dürrenmatt will be exhibited alongside works by Vanessa Billy (*1978), Christine Boillat (*1978), Miriam Cahn (*1949), Alain Huck (*1957) and Gilles Rotzetter (*1978) to shine a contemporary light on an issue that is more relevant now than ever.
An edition of the CDN Cahier and a podcast series will be released to accompany the exhibition (in French and German).
